1The Undertones: S/T
I got introduced to this after seeing a shirt at a Buzzcocks/Lunachicks gig in Boston and fell in love from the first track. Feargal’s warbling vocals, and the super poppy punk sound was amazing to hear, and pushed me in a new direction as a young drummer.
2Turbonegro: Hot Cars & Spent Contraceptives
Saw them playing most of the songs on this record in the late 90s when they played in the States. Joined the Turbojugend shortly after and have met so many bands and cool people since.
3Sleater Kinney: S/T
In a period of cool lo-fi bands of the mid-90s, people were so into other shit that they slept on these badass women. This is a record I’ll play along to every time I can and wish I was as cool as Janet Weiss.
4The Smiths: Louder Than Bombs
Mike Joyce is a powerhouse, and hearing “Sweet & Tender Hooligan” is proof of that. Morrissey is the guy everyone loves to hate, and for good reasons, but the Smiths undeniably influenced generations of musicians.
5V/A: This are Two Tone
Growing up in Boston, we had bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Allstonians, and Skavoovie – but finding this scuffed up compilation with the Specials, Madness, and Selecter improved my music AND sense of style.
6The Meffs: What A Life
Brutal, fast, loud and unapologetically political punk from the best 2-piece band on the road. Had the pleasure of seeing them a few times now and not only amazing people but one of the hardest working bands out there today.
7March: Set Loose
Dumb Bats have been lucky to play at some gigs/festivals the last few years, and this is one of the slickest bands out there. Constantly putting the work in, and better every single time. Plus, “Start Again” is constantly popping on my playlist, and is a damn masterpiece.
8The Jam: In The City
I love punk, northern soul, and Motown, and the Jam showed their love for all of that. Hell, they covered “Slow Down” by Larry Williams and showed that the roots of punk go a lot deeper than 1977.
9The Clash: London Calling
London Calling is one of the coolest albums ever made. Not an opinion, just pure fact. “Guns of Brixton”, “Hateful”, “Clampdown?” Writing one of those would be a career topping achievement, and those are just on the first half of the record!
10Beastie Boys: Check your head
Is it hip-hop? Funk? Skate punk? Easy, Beastie Boys did whatever they wanted. And, Mike D. is a crazy under appreciated drummer. Go listen to this on blast.
