Und wieder feiert ein Album Jubiläum bei dem sich viele denken werden wo ist nur die Zeit hingekommen?! Heute vor 25 (!) Jahren am 28. Oktober 1994 veröffentlichten vier junge, skatende Schweden ihr Debütalbum Tiny Tunes (nach einem Rechtsstreit mit Warner Bros. im Jahr 1998 musste der Albumname in Same Old Tunes umbenannt und das Cover geändert werden).
Nach den beiden Demo-Tapes Goofy und Melack wurden Millencolin bei dem in ihrer Heimatstadt Örebro ansässigen Label Burning Heart Records unter Vertrag genommen. Noch vor ihrem ersten Longplayer, veröffentlichte man die beiden EP´s Use Your Nose (1993) und Skauch (1994).
Die Qualität der zwölf Songs, ihres folgenden Debüts, bleiben auch 25 Jahre später noch nahezu unangefochten in der Diskografie der Band. Das Album spricht für sich und war ohnehin ein Must-Have in der sich gerade formierenden Skatepunk-Szene.

Die CD mit dem Originalcover gehört wohl aktuell mit zu den abgerocktesten in meinem Regal. Unzählige Partys mitgemacht aber sie läuft noch – Mr.Clean, Da Strike, Leona, Dance Craze, The Einstein Crew…zählen wir doch gleich alle auf: Chiquita Chaser, Disney Time, Domestic Subway, Fazil´s Friend, Houes Of Blend, Mystic Reptile und Take It Or Leave It. Alles Songs mit unglaublicher Eingängigkeit und vor allem einer Spielfreude die Tiny Tunes bis heute einen Kultstatus verliehen haben.

Zum 25-jährigen Jubiläum wird noch in diesem Jahr eine Vinyl-Reissue von Same Old Tunes veröffentlicht. Die damalige Erstpressung ist natürlich längst vergriffen oder nur noch zu utopischen Preisen unter Sammlern erhältlich.
Erst in diesen Tagen gab die Band in einem Post über die sozialen Medien eine Anekdote zur Cover-Gestaltung bekannt:
Let’s move back to 1994 when Erik came up with the idea of calling our first album Tiny Tunes inspired by the Warner Bros Nintendo game Tiny Toon’s cover art. Erik, who at the time didn’t have access to a computer with PhotoShop in color, (actually few had at the time, since they costed a fortune) created the cover art with ink, airbrush, acrylic paint and glued xerox copies. Our record label Burning Heart used a printer company based in the city of Köping at the time who scanned the art and did the original layout files in Quark Express from instructions. That’s where Erik sent the Tiny Tunes artwork and instructions of colors, fonts etc. The CD was made and the printers never sent the original cover art back and was forever lost.
However, the album did really good! After a year, in 1995 Warner Bros lawyers also realized that and decided to sue Burning Heart and make us change the cover and title. We were on tour in the US at the time and the change had to be done immediately. We came up with the new title Same Old Tunes since the songs are the same. Erik choose to switch the back of the artwork to the front and get rid of the colored rings and just have the guy who was on the front on the back instead. These changes were made over a crappy motel phone line with Kalle Haglund (The same guy who later did our Kemp video and recent Sour Days Video) who was the Burning Heart art guy at the time. Since www wasn’t really a thing back in 96, Erik couldn’t see the final result. Something that bugged him later and when it was time to make a vinyl in 97, Erik had the time to change it to how he would have done it by changing colors and fonts.
This was however forgotten by Erik who never grabbed a copy of the vinyl. So when these reissues of Same Old Tunes, Home From Home and Kingwood were remade from old Quark files by Magnus Bergman, who used to work at Burning Heart after Kalle and is still working for Epitaph Europe, the cover was in of course blue! Which Magnus just made us aware of. Kingsroad Merch and us, have already posted the pics of the re-issue cover in the same color as the CD, but the re-issue vinyl will be in the only way it’s ever been on vinyl: blue!
Die Band veröffentlichte nach dem ersten Longplayer noch weitere acht Studioalben und ist heute noch mit der selben Besetzung wie 1993 unterwegs – Respekt!
Schade dass auf der Setlist der letzten Jahre leider immer „nur“ Mr.Clean von dem Debütalbum stand, vielleicht ändert sich das ja zur kommenden Tour 2020. Hier noch die Termine dazu:
